School Physicals Q & A

Who Needs a School Physical?

Because each school may have its own set of rules, you should talk to your child’s school first to learn the health requirements for admission before scheduling a school physical. In general, children in the state of Texas must have the required immunizations, unless exempted, before they can start public school. An exemption may be given because of a health condition or for religious reasons.

Your child may also require a special physical if they plan on participating in a sport.

What Happens During a School Physical?

You can expect a thorough examination when you or your child comes in for a school physical. At Humble Family Practice, everyone receives the same high-quality care, no matter the reason for the visit.

During the school physical, your practitioner checks:

  • Height and weight
  • Blood pressure and heart rate
  • Lungs and digestive system
  • Eyes, ears, and throat
  • Reflexes
  • Internal organs through palpation

Your practitioner may also request blood work to assess for anemia or other health conditions. Antibody titers may also be measured to assess your child’s immunity to certain illnesses, which may help direct the types of vaccinations your child may need.

Most importantly, your practitioner at Humble Family Practice provides the required vaccinations to help protect you, or your child, from getting sick. Vaccinations help your body build up antibodies to common illnesses so if you do come into contact with a virus or bacteria, your body has the means to fight it off.

For a sports physical, the examination may also include special testing to assess strength, endurance, and posture. You need to get a sports physical well in advance of the start of the season, but it’s good for a year and should cover all of your child’s sporting activities throughout the school year.

Do I Need to Bring Paperwork?

If your school requires specific paperwork to be completed, you should bring that with you when you come in for the school physical. To ensure all your records are up-to-date and that the school gets the most accurate information, you may also want to bring in prior immunization and health records.
