Hormone Replacement

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is a quickly emerging option for men and women suffering through hormone deficiencies. Although hormone replacement therapy is nothing new, it has long relied on imperfect methods to deliver those hormones, or it has relied on using synthetic hormones. Creams, gels, injections – those are the now obsolete tools that have been given to patients for decades, but there’s a better option available in the form of BioTE. BioTE is a much more precise and natural form of treatment, utilizing tiny pellets that are implanted under the skin.

Incidentally, pellet therapy is nothing new, either, with success dating back to the 1930s. However, it hasn’t dominated the commercials like the creams and gels have, to the detriment of patients. Fortunately, BioTE is now a highly accessible option that provides longer term hormone replacement than alternatives, and can do so without many of the common side effects that come with creams or gels.

What is BioTE

BioTE is a form of bioidentical hormone therapy that utilizes tiny pellets – smaller than a grain of rice – placed just under the skin. BioTE pellets are made from bioidentical hormones, so they dissolve completely once the current treatment run ends. There is no need to go back into the skin and remove anything. Unlike other forms of hormone therapy, there are no synthetic materials used in BioTE.

But what does it mean to use bioidentical hormones? The truth is, many mainstream forms of hormone replacement, including those creams, deliver synthetic hormones to the body. Synthetic hormones, including hormones derived and synthesized from animal tissues, are not the same as the hormones found in the human body. Though the differences are at the molecular level, there is emerging research that suggests that even this small difference is enough to alter how they function in the human body. This seems to be an obvious point – why would the human body readily accept hormones that aren’t exactly like the hormones it produces?

The Benefits of BioTE

Hormone replacement therapy has numerous benefits for patients, for both men and women. As people age, their hormone levels drop. For the average person, after they turn 30, they produce three to 10 percent fewer hormones every year. That adds up in a hurry, and the effects are well known. Some of them include:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Lack of energy and significant fatigue
  • Poor focus and memory
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Problems with weight gain, including an inability to lose weight
  • Reduced muscle strength
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Stifled libido and problems with sexual performance

BioTE seeks to correct those frustrating symptoms by bringing hormone levels back into balance. Patients who have undergone BioTE have noted improvement in several areas, with better energy and libido, increased muscle tone and bone mass, and alleviation of postmenopausal symptoms.

The case for BioTE is comprehensive and clear. It is an easily administered form of treatment that minimizes side effects and keeps hormone levels in balance. It works for men and women, and it uses natural hormones instead of synthetic versions. In short, there’s no substitute for BioTE.

BioTE Versus Synthetic Hormone Treatments

A review of dozens of studies (Postgrad Med., 2009) concerning bioidentical and synthetic hormones found that patients reported greater satisfaction when using bioidentical hormones. That review also found several physiological differences between natural hormones like progesterone and their synthetic versions. There needs to be more research on synthetic hormones and the risks they carry, but the initial results are in favor of natural hormones.

A widely noted problem with creams, gels and injections is that they usually create huge swings in hormonal levels, inundating patients with extremely high levels immediately following treatment. This can cause a number of side effects, including severe headaches and nausea. In short, the body is no equipped to handle such swings in hormonal levels. It’s also rather inconvenient to have to apply treatment on a near constant basis.

BioTE is not a daily, or even weekly, form of treatment. At a minimum, a single round of BioTE will last for three months, releasing minute amounts of natural hormones over time, in a form that the body can readily metabolize. Unlike patches, creams or injections, BioTE doesn’t have to go through the liver or stomach to deliver the hormone – a process that can cause additional side effects and produce unwanted byproducts. Instead, BioTE delivers the hormone directly into the bloodstream, keeping secondary effects on the body to a minimum.
